A new dance competition, Echobration, aimed at celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Ijaw people, has kicked off on October 1 and will run throughout the month.

According to Bralatei Echo Toikumoh, Echobration is a tribute to his late dad, Field Marshal Echo Eoyerigha Toikumoh, whose legacy in music and activism continues to inspire.

In an effort to honour his father’s memory, Bralatei is calling on participants worldwide to showcase their creativity by interpreting Ijaw music through dance and other artistic expressions. “My father’s music wasn’t just about entertainment; it was about using art as a platform for activism, education and cultural upliftment,” he said.

Known for his fearless social commentary, Bralatei addressed key issues such as inflation, oppression, and the need for education in his popular songs. One of his notable tracks, My Beloved Country, Nigeria, poignantly tackles political unrest while promoting a sense of national pride.

The competition offers Ijaw indigenes a chance to connect with their roots by performing creative renditions of Echo’s music. Contestants are encouraged to interpret the late icon’s songs not only through traditional dance, but also through drama, storytelling, and other innovative formats that capture the essence of his messages.

“We want people to express themselves in any way that resonates with Echo’s music,” said Mike Useghan, the coordinator of Echobration. “It’s not limited to dance alone. We’re looking for interpretations that reflect the spirit of his powerful lyrics.”

Participants are expected to upload their performances to social media platforms, tagging the organisers. Winners will be selected based on engagement, with the most likes and comments determining the top performers. The overall winner will take home a grand prize of N100,000 while the 1st and 2nd runners-up will receive N80,000 and N60,000 respectively. There are also consolation prizes for other standout contestants.
