The Nigerian Idol season 9 is getting hotter with each episode, as every live show witnesses the exit of a contestant and outstanding performances of others.

In a surprising turn of events, the last episode featured a double eviction of Gracia and David Garland, who had remarkable journeys and overcame numerous challenges to reach the Top 9. Both were eliminated after receiving the fewest votes from the previous week – a decision determined by the viewers.

The week’s theme: ‘Divas and Divos’ allowed contestants to honour music legends by performing their timeless songs. Chioma ignited the evening with a high-energy performance of Tina Turner’s Proud Mary, setting a vibrant tone for the show. The judges praised her significant growth and flawless vocal delivery.

Stevie followed suit with a classic rendition of Jackson 5’s Who’s Loving You, captivating both the live audience and viewers at home with his impressive vocal skills and stage presence.

Other notable performances included Mira Clear’s impeccable rendition of Mary J. Blige’s Be Without You and Lady Ruth’s soulful interpretation of Mariah Carey’s My All. Next was Lammy’s performance of Bryan Adams’ Everything I Do.

One of the highlights of the night was Chima’s excellent voice control and energy with his rendition of Stevie Wonder’s Lately. However, Maio’s soulful rendition of Michael Jackson’s Heal the World evoked nostalgia, with the audience singing along to the iconic anthem of hope and unity.

The evening concluded with the evicted Gracia and Garland, each delivering one last performance. Garland impressed with Celine Dion’s I Surrender, while Gracia wowed the audience with her rendition of Lady Marmalade by Patti LaBelle, which the judges deemed the best performance of the night.

Meanwhile, the journey to crown the next Nigerian Idol continues, promising more twists and turns ahead. Fans can support their favourite contestants to remain on the show and win by voting each week. Voting is free and can be done via MyDStv or MyGOtv app, or on the Africa Magic website: africamagic.tv/nigerianidol. Voting closes at 8pm every Thursday.
