As the world prepares to commemorate the 2026 World Theatre Day, TheatreMania Africa Festival (TAF) is shifting the spotlight from mere entertainment to the urgent necessity of global diplomacy.
With the theme: ‘Theatre and the Culture of Peace: Building Bridges, Not Borders’, this year’s landmark TAF international webinar holds today, Friday, March 27 at 2pm.
In an era where geopolitical tension and warmongering frequently dominate the airwaves, the webinar serves as a strategic intervention. It aims to re-establish the stage as a neutral ground where dialogue triumphs over division and where the performing arts act as a catalyst for socio-political healing.
The 2026 theme acknowledges that while borders may define nations, they should not confine the human spirit.
Through this session, TAF seeks to demonstrate how the “wooden boards” of the theatre provide a sturdier foundation for peace than many political treaties. It further buttresses the fact that there is need for a new script for global harmony.
Reflecting on the initiative’s transformative power, Alayande Stephen, CEO/Co-Founder of TheatreMania Africa Festival, noted: “We are at crossroads where the world needs more than just speeches; it needs the visceral, empathetic connection that only the theatre provides. At TAF, we believe the stage is the original ‘social media’ – a place where we don’t just see a story, but feel the heartbeat of our neighbour.
“By hosting this webinar, we are asserting that the arts are not a luxury of peace, but a prerequisite for it. We are building a platform where the only thing we ‘break’ is the cycle of misunderstanding.”
The webinar will feature a diverse array of global voices, each bringing a unique cultural perspective to the discourse on peace building. They include Serge Aime Coulibaly, Creative Director, Ankata Dance Company (Burkina Faso); Titilola Aboyade-Cole, MD/CEO, Podium Empire International & Creative Entrepreneur (UK); Dr. Sam Uche Anyamele, veteran actor, scholar and thespian; Kemisola Otekaiye-Colloraffi (Nkan), Afro-Soul sensation and MD, Nkan Media (Oakland, USA); AJ Dagga Tolar, award-winning author, activist, musician and poet; and Alayande Stephen, CEO/Co-Founder, TAF (Moderator).
According to the organisers, the panelists will engage in a cross-continental dialogue, exploring how dance, drama and poetry can be “weaponised” for positive social change and utilized as a form of “soft power” to mediate international tensions.
The webinar is an annual project for the build up to the TAF event later in the year; its mission is to reposition African theatre within the global creative economy. By uniting the African Diaspora with homegrown talent, the festival is creating a borderless ecosystem for artistic excellence. Indeed, it is a step in redefining the African narrative.
Expanding on the vision behind the 2026 celebration, Alayande stated: “This is about reclaiming our narrative as a continent of storytellers and peace-makers. For too long, the African story has been told through the lens of struggle (which in itself is not negative).
“Through this webinar, we are showing the world our capacity for intellectual leadership in the arts. Here, we are connecting the dots between Lagos, London, Oakland and Ouagadougou to prove that when the drums of theatre beat, they drown out the drums of war. This is our contribution to a global future where our shared culture is our strongest currency.”
Theatre enthusiasts, practitioners, students, art lovers, and advocates for social change are encouraged to join this high-level conversation. Interested participants can register at: www.theatremaniaafrica.com/wtd
