Women have been urged to take adequate care of their natural hair.

This came at a workshop organised in Lagos recently by Natures Gentle Touch where opportunities were provided for participants eager to learn more about maintaining and managing their natural hair. The women not only received personalised consultations, they were also tutored on how to maintain their natural hair.

Adeyeye Ibukunoluwa, a graduate awaiting call-up for the Nigerian Youth Service Corps, said it was her second time of attending the workshop. According to her, since she started attending the workshop, her approach to taking care of her hair has changed.

“Before coming to the workshop, I have always believed that my hair cannot grow beyond the length I have seen in years. I didn’t know that split ends caused the stunted growth. At the workshop, I got to know that if your hair has split ends, you have to trim it. Trimming the hair once in a while helps the hair grow well,” she explained.

Adeyeye added: “The way you apply certain products determines if your hair would grow or not. For example, if a product were applied wrongly, it would affect the hair. You cannot apply product meant for scalp on hair strands.”

Lanre Oluwa, also a graduate, has participated in the workshop more than three times. Relating her experiences, she said, “The biggest tip I grabbed is how to massage my scalp and wash my hair with the tips of my fingers, specifically avoiding using fingernails to scrub the pads of the fingertips. I also learned to take down braids within two to three weeks to avoid breakage. Keeping to this has helped my hair improve a lot.”

Oloyede Adebukola, a student of University of Lagos, was excited to share how educative the workshop was. She stated: “Learning about hair breakage, hair texture, and when to trim the hair, are not new to me, but I never knew how important they are in maintaining a healthy hair. For us who wear our hair natural, deep conditioning must be a regular routine for easy management.”
