For singer, actor and performer, Debbie Ohiri, being part of this year’s 500 City Choir Christmas Concert was more than mere showcase; it was a deeply personal and spiritual experience.
Ohiri delivered an awe-inspiring performance at the 2nd edition of the concert held recently at RCCG Canaan Land, Lekki, Lagos. With the theme: ‘The King’s Festival’, the event displayed the best of musical artistry and spiritual worship. And for Debbie, it was an exhilarating experience.
Reflecting on her journey, she said, “Being part of this second edition feels like a full-circle moment. I remember where I was during the first edition, both personally and in my career, and the promises I made to God during that moment of worship. God has truly exceeded my expectations in unimaginable ways.”
Debbie explained further that her work is an act of devotion. “For me, the arts are not just about performance, it’s a calling. Whether I’m singing, chanting, acting, producing or consulting, it always feels like worship, an offering of my essence back to Almighty God, Olodumare, the giver of my talent.”
The event also highlighted Debbie’s connection to the 500 City Choir and its founder, Shallom Matthew, whom she fondly referred to as her ‘industry son’. She recounted her role in Shallom’s journey, from their first meeting at the MUSON School of Music to coaching him during The Voice season 3.
“Watching him grow into this phenomenal institution is humbling. To now be part of this vision he has built is truly beautiful,” she stated, expressing her pride in Shallom’s achievements and praying for his continued success.
