For popular drummer, Uyiekpen Manners Cole aka Uyi Talent, who manned the beat for Sunny Neji, Alariwo of Africa and Night Shifters Band, he relocated from Lagos to Benin in order to build on his dad’s musical legacy.
According to the Edo State-born Business Administration graduate of Yaba College of Technology, his decision to relocate has paid off handsomely, as he became the Acting Band Leader of Talents of Benin, his father’s band.
He explained further: “I started my music tutelage in my father’s band, Talents of Benin despite the fact that he did not encourage it initially. When I got to Lagos to study, I enrolled in a music school to upgrade my drumming skills and start a musical career afterwards. I played drums for many artistes including Sunny Neji, Alariwo and the late Chris Hanen until my father relocated to the US, leaving his legacy behind. I also fell in love with the guitar and developed more of my guitar laying skills.
“One day, it struck me to relocate to the vibrant Benin music scene where my father, the legendary Idemudia Cole had made a huge name with his band. Since my relocation, I have not looked back. I have led a band that never rests during the weekends, as we are fully booked for many events like weddings and other ceremonies. Because of this, we are engaged in daily rehearsals.
“I believe it is my exploits that put me into the famous ‘Sons of Edo Music Legends’ group put together by respected music producer and band leader, 24Bits with whom I have toured the world, playing in the UK and many EU countries. I hope and wish to perform in more international shows.”
Commenting on his new body of work while also reminiscing on his international tours, Uyi Talent said, “I have made a five-track highlife and contemporary music album titled, Osa Uruese. It is difficult for me to forget the ‘Story Story’ concert by Sons of Edo Music Legends in 2021, which took us through the UK cities like London, Leeds, Birmingham, and Manchester. I can’t also forget the tours to Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Italy, Spain and a host of other EU countries organised by 24Bits International and Ehizoya Golden Entertainment.”
