Talented producer and writer, Nicolette Ndigwe-Kalu, is steadily building a reputation for emotionally grounded, commercially resonant movies.

In fact, Ndigwe-Kalu belongs to a new generation of producers redefining the scope, scale and ambition of African storytelling. With the release of On Different Grounds, she takes a decisive step forward in shaping a new kind of narrative within the industry – one that moves beyond conventional romance to explore the complexities of love, family, and identity in contemporary African society.

Reputed for her breakout feature, Before Valentine’s (Netflix), Ndigwe-Kalu continues to expand her creative footprint with stories that bridge nostalgia and modernity. Her latest project, On Different Grounds, exemplifies this vision: a high-society wedding drama that explores love after divorce, generational tension, and cultural intersections – all within a commercially engaging framework.

Speaking on her approach to storytelling, Ndigwe-Kalu shares: “I’m interested in stories that feel familiar but are rarely told this way. We’ve seen many love stories about beginnings – I want to explore what happens after, when emotions are more complicated, and the stakes are more real.”

Through her production company, HB&Q Impressions Studio, the producer is actively building a slate of original films designed to resonate with both local and global audiences.

With a focus on strong characters, cultural authenticity and cinematic scale, the studio reflects a growing commitment to elevating Nollywood’s narrative and production standards.

Directed by Mildred Okwo, widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most respected creative forces, On Different Grounds marks the studio’s second original feature and signals a clear trajectory: stories rooted in African identity while appealing to a broad, international audience.

Staring Bob-Manuel Udokwu, Jennifer Eliogu, Nkem Owoh, Uche Jombo and Ebele Okaro, alongside Uche Montana, Bambam, Ifeanyi Kalu, and the Mbadiwe Twins, with international appearances from Abena Akuaba, Nimesh Diliprai Desai and Vineet Raina, On Different Grounds follows the Fregenes, a divorced billionaire couple brought back together to plan their eldest daughter’s wedding – unknowingly walking into the daughter’s carefully laid scheme to reunite them.

Set against the glamour of a lavish Lagos wedding, the film weaves romance, family conflict, cultural collision, and genuine comedy into a story that is both hilarious and deeply moving.

Speaking on her collaboration with Mildred Okwo, Ndigwe-Kalu said: “Knowing that she rarely takes on director-for-hire roles, I could only really picture her bringing my vision to life. I decided to take the step and ask. After she read the script and asked what I wanted to achieve with it, her heart was won – and the rest, they say, is history. I truly believe she is one of the best in film.”

Beyond her latest release, Ndigwe-Kalu is already advancing an ambitious development slate. Her already completed projects include All The Brides Men, a large-scale international romantic comedy currently concluded in post-production, and Promise Of Tomorrow, a futurist short film set in 2045 that reimagines an innovative, forward-facing Africa through a bold cinematic lens.

Further underscoring her rising global profile, Ndigwe-Kalu has been selected to participate in the prestigious Producers Network at the Cannes Marché du Film – a highly competitive platform that connects leading producers from around the world with international financiers, distributors, and collaborators. This selection places her among a new wave of African filmmakers gaining increased visibility within the global film ecosystem.

As On Different Grounds finally hit the cinemas across the country on June 12, after a high profile premiere and private screening convening cultural and diplomatic leaders, Ndigwe-Kalu, a fellow of the highly respected Elevate Africa Fellowship, stands at the forefront of a new wave of producers shaping the future of African cinema.
